Monterey Bay Aquarium

I always look forward to my annual trip to Monterey. It means I get to spend time with my friends and their chocolate lab in a beautiful place…

…and I get to go behind the scenes at the Monterey Bay Aquarium!

One of Erin's responsibilities is to feed the seven gill sharks (she's the one in the pink fins). It's a two person job: one person feeds the shark with vitamin-infused salmon using an alligator clip while the other keeps other hungry fish away.

Feeding a cleverly camouflaged angel shark.

Some species, like the bat ray, are target trained. This allows the aquarists to monitor how much the bat rays eat because, as bottom feeders, they cannot successfully compete with the other aggressive, fast swimming fish.

Some marine life are obligate swimmers, meaning they must continually swim to survive, while others are non-obligate. Leopard sharks fall into the second category and can be seen lying still. This is because they have muscles that let them to pump water over their gills so they can receive fresh oxygen. Below, a leopard shark lies on the bottom while another leopard shark and a seven gill shark swim by.

The same exhibit viewed from above.

The Open Sea is a massive exhibit. The tank holds one million gallons of water and several varieties of marine life including tuna, dolphin fish (also known as mahi mahi), green turtles, hammerhead sharks, and sardines, just to name a few. I got to watch a feeding from behind the scenes.

Feeding time for the African Black Footed penguins.

There's been a fascinating seahorse exhibit for several months.

The leafy seahorse really lives up to its name!

They eat small shrimp and, almost immediately after each bite, you can see a quick puff cloud shoot out from the back of their heads which is them secreting the oil from the shrimp.

Jellyfish are mesmerizing to watch. A jellyfish swims by squeezing its bell (the main body) to propel itself forward.

Spotted jellyfish.

A flamboyant cuddle fish.

I got to watch the sea otters feed and train. Before eating, Rosa practiced her training. She had to retrieve a toy and then put it in the bucket. The three otters are fed their clams simultaneously by three trainers so the otters don't try to compete with each other for food.

So long, super special fancy airline status

For the past couple of years, my travels had earned me elite status with United Airlines but unfortunately my status expired at the end of January. Boo! So here’s a look at my last time getting to use an airport lounge. This one happens to be at Tokyo’s Narita airport.

Just look at this bathroom!

Snacks!

Fancy a nap? Relax in the quiet area in either a regular chair or a vibrating chair!

My favorite thing about lounges? The shower! Otherwise I’m pretty sure you’re not supposed to take your clothes off in the airport.

Farewell, airport lounges across the world. I’ll miss you. Sniff.

Sydney by Seaplane part 2

A one minute trailer of the seaplane trip…Bollywood style!

Australia miscellaneous

It's been a great couple of weeks in Sydney, but there are two things that have baffled me. Why is everything so expensive here? (Almost $40 Australian for a six pack of Corona at the liquor store!) And what's with all the guys wearing short neon shorts?

Sydney by Seaplane

For our last day in Oz, Josh and I took a seaplane flight out to the northern beaches!

Take off!

We had great views flying over Manly and the other northern beaches.

The beach where we munched on a great picnic. It was pretty overcast and drizzled on us a bit, but we were just happy it wasn't a scorching day. Of course, we still ended up with minor sunburns despite the cloud cover!

Flying over the city on our way back.

Happy customers!

Sydney Harbour Bridge Climb

The Sydney Harbour Bridge took eight years, required two thousand employees, and cost sixteen lives to complete in 1932.

In 1989 businessman Paul Cove began pushing the government to let customers walk along the bridge’s arch. Nearly a decade passed before Cove won the government’s approval and in the past twenty plus years, more than 2.75 million people have climbed the bridge.

The climb starts by donning a snazzy one piece suit before going through a brief safety demonstration. The climb itself isn’t much of a climb, more like walking up a gentle hill. Meanwhile, the group leader tells anecdotes of the bridge’s history. I’ve done the climb three times now and I don’t think I’ve ever heard the same stories twice. And the views are magnificent!

Each climber is presented with a certificate after their climb. Since this is my third climb, I’m a master climber and earned a gold certificate! Wahoo!

New Year’s Eve

Josh and I watched Sydney's famous fireworks show from a ship called–what else–The Penguin!

The harbor was full of different boats: posh yachts, booze cruises, little dinghies. The Penguin was a modest yet comfortable sail boat. It was a casual atmosphere, as you can see by the captain steering with his feet.

The ANZAC Bridge.

Preparing the fireworks.

Fire boats showing off their water power.

Cupcakes are essential to finishing a year off right. Essential!

Sydney's iconic harbor.

A stunt pilot put on a spectacular show doing loops, cutting his engine, and spinning around the harbor.

Messages of love, friendship, and more than a few proposals were flashed on the pillars of the Sydney Harbour Bridge. This one is blurry but it says, “Happy New Years Canada! I miss you.”

“In 2013 I will embrace tolerance, understanding, and low calorie chocolate.”

Jet skis dashed about and, once the sun had set, put on a great pyrotechnics show.

Nighttime in the central business district.

Dozens of boats participated in a parade of lights. The theme for the night was embrace.

Midnight came and along with it probably the most magnificent fireworks display I've ever seen!

Afterwards, the smoke cleared over the Opera House and the scene was perfect.
